Capstone Project Premise

Does a busy college student who is juggling multiple responsibilities—being in a band, completing an internship, and working two full-time jobs—really have the time to learn how to play guitar well? The answer, without a shadow of doubt, is definitely no! However, there might be a clever and efficient way to kill two birds with one stone by enhancing my existing music through the use of guitar pedals by playing on a trombone and baritone/euphonium. But here’s the big, intriguing question that really matters: which sounds better and feels more authentic—virtual pedals simulated through software, or real, physical pedals that you can touch and tweak? To help you uncover the answer for yourself, make sure to listen carefully to the 6 audio files provided below. Afterward, take your time to reflect and draw your own conclusions based on what you hear in each track. And if you want to dive even deeper and explore all the detailed information behind this experiment, just click on the link titled “Capstone Project Experiment” located in the yellow menu bar above. And one more important thing to keep in mind: no electric guitars were used for any of the recordings presented here. Instead, this was creatively made using only a trombone and baritone/euphonium, adding a unique twist to the soundscape.
